What is Sample Society? Well, let me tell you… It’s a subscription box service that will send you 5 deluxe-sized samples from popular beauty brands. This includes hair & skin care, make-up and perfume. The cost is $15 a month, and along with those deluxe-sized samples, you will also receive a $15 off gift code to redeem on a $50 purchase. The purchase has to include at least one of the items featured in that month’s box.
Sample Society was my first subscription box service. I like to call it my gateway box to the world of subscription box services. It’s also one of the best values out there. I love to try new products, however, since I’m on a budget (like most people), I want to make sure what I spend my money on is worth it, and do a lot of research beforehand. With Sample Society, I get to test out products in the convenience of my own home, AND the samples are a good size, so I can use them more than once.
Sample Society has so many great qualities. Great price, great customer service, and sometimes they even send out a full-sized product! They also are very timely when it comes to billing and shipping the boxes. I get charged on the 30th of every month, and they ship out the box on the 1st. If for some reason they are unable to ship the box on the 1st, they send out an email letting everyone know and explain why. They also include a $5 off gift code, and sometimes they include extras in the box!
I’ve ranted enough about my love for Sample Society, let’s get to reviewing the latest box….
ALTERNA Bamboo Shine Luminous Shine Mist - Deluxe Sample (.85 fl oz)
When you sign up for Sample Society, they give you a quiz where they ask about your hair type. They obviously did not look into that when curating this box. I have naturally oily hair, and do not need a boost in the shine department. However, Alterna is a great brand. I used their shampoo for blondes when I used to bleach my hair, and it did wonders.
YU-BE Moisturizing Skin Cream - Deluxe Sample (.1 oz)
When I first opened up the cap, it looked like medicated ointment. However, once I rubbed it on my hands, it felt like I was rubbing cashmere on them. The only downside is it has a VERY strong smell of aloe. Much stronger than Vaseline.
DR. BRANDT Flexitone BB Cream SPF 30 - Deluxe Sample (.25 oz)
I have a love/hate relationship with BB Creams. The idea is great, and the few times I have used them I could really see a difference. However, I have very fair skin. This BB Cream is for all skin types. One size definitely does not fit all. I took a picture to show how ridiculous it looked compared to my skin tone. I tried to blend it in as well as I could. Unfortunately, no amount of blending did not bring it anywhere close to my skin tone. I think I’ll stick to BB Creams that are just for fair skin.
JANE IREDALE Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip & Cheek Stain - Sample Size
When I first opened the box, I thought that they forgot to include this. When they posted that this was going to be in the box, I thought that it would be full-sized as the full-sized product looked small. I only tried this on my lips, as I don’t believe in ‘two-for’ products. It reminds me of my boyfriend’s shampoo that includes conditioner and body wash. No thanks. However, the color looks as natural as bright pink lips can be, and feels very light-weight, almost like a chapstick.
KATE SOMERVILLE 360 Tanning Towelette - Deluxe Sample (1 towelette)
Despite having a skin color I would classify as “transparent” (and darn proud of it!) I’m going to give this a try…some day. I’ve tried a lot of sunless tanning in the past, and it always leaves me with orange streaks. I’ve read good reviews on this product on Beauty Bar’s website, so I’m hopeful. It’s disappointing that it’s only 1 towelette. I’m not sure how much that can cover…maybe one leg?
TOTAL VALUE: $22.14
(Minus Jane Iredale Cheek & Lip Stain)
This wasn’t my favorite box, but it’s worth the price. Just because I didn’t enjoy most of the products, doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t. Definitely still keeping my subscription. I’m a fan, and they haven’t disappointed me yet.
If you’re not a member, it’s definitely worth trying out. You can cancel at anytime. When any of my friends ask me about subscription boxes and which ones are the best, I always recommend this one first. It’s one of the cheapest ones out there (Birchbox is the cheapest, but good luck getting invited to that one! I’ve been on the wait-list for 2 months!) and the box is always worth the price.
