Kiwi Crate Review – January 2014

Kiwi Crate is a monthly subscription box of arts, crafts and science kits designed around fun themes for kids ages 3-7 and filled with all the materials and inspiration for hands-on projects. Developmentally appropriate, and child-led to encourage creativity and learning. There is a new theme every month.

Cost: $19.95 / month, $19.95 / month (3 month sub.), $18.50 / month (6 month sub.), $16.95 / month (12 month sub.) - Shipping is free in the U.S. and $6.95 to Canada.

I don't think I need to tell you that my son couldn't wait to take a look inside the box. He loves Kiwi Crate and we always have fun doing the projects together. You can check out all my Kiwi Crates reviews here.

January's theme is  "Mad Science" and includes everything you need to complete 2 projects - My Science Lab and My Weeble Wobblers.

Kiwi Crate always comes in neatly packaged and all the supplies are in perfect condition. I've never had an issue with leakage or anything broken.

My Science Lab

This project included everything you need to experiment with liquids and colours with a pair of mad scientist test tubes. It's high on the messiness scale and medium on the grownup involvement. The cornstarch isn't part of this project. It's for another activity that's in the explore! magazine (I realized that after).

All we did was mix water, oil and food colouring in the test tubes to see what happens when you add different amounts of each. I think he's a little young for this one. He just enjoyed shaking the test tubes and didn't quite grasp the "science" part of it.  I thought this was a bit of a boring project and expected more out of it.

My Weeble Wobblers

This project included everything you need to build two wobbling scientists and use colour changing markers to decorate them. Then experiment with then to learn about balance! It's low on the messiness scale and low on grownup involvement.

I think the coolest part of this activity was the colour changing markers! My son was fascinated by them and loved decorating the scientists. Then he raced the wobblers and thought it was so funny how they just wobble around.

explore! Magazine

I love this magazine and think it's great that Kiwi Crate includes this in the box. The magazine has a story, additional activities, instructions to make a DIY lava lamp and another project to do.

Kiwi Crate Review – January 2014

This definitely wasn't my favourite Kiwi Crate, but it was cool that it was more of an educational box while still trying to be fun. I think my son would benefit more from it in another year or so, but either way he had fun and that's all that matters!
