For February, StoryCaptain chose two inspiring books by African American authors. Both of these books show how even little kids can make a big impact.
Ron's Big Mission
Nine-year-old Ron loves going to the Lake City Public Library to look through all the books on airplanes and flight. Today, Ron is ready to take out books by himself. But in the segregated world of South Carolina in the 1950s, Ron's obtaining his own library card is not just a small rite of passage—it is a young man's first courageous mission. Here is an inspiring story, based on Ron McNair's life, of how a little boy, future scientist, and Challenger astronaut desegregated his library through peaceful resistance.
What is Given from the Heart
This final, magnificent picture book from three-time Coretta Scott King Award winner and Newbery Honor author Patricia McKissack is a poignant and uplifting celebration of the joy of giving.
I applaud StoryCaptain for its focus on Black History Month. Both of these books are beautiful and inspiring. As they mention on their blog, " kids gain tremendous value from being exposed to different cultures and perspectives". I couldn't agree more and appreciate that they are doing their part in showcasing underrepresented authors.
