Groovy Lab in a Box, who kindly sent me this box to review, is full of everything a child needs to learn about and do hands on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiments. Each month features all the supplies needed to complete activities, experiments, and design challenges outlined in our custom, subject specific lab notebook. Groovy Lab in a Box is for children ages 8+.
Groovy Lab in a Box was created to encourage children to channel their inner STEMist (STEM•ist - Expert in applying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Creator, explorer, inventor…STEMist!). Their purpose is to provide children with an opportunity to focus his or her imagination, determination, and innately inquisitive nature with a way to complete a monthly STEM project using the Engineering Design Process. By utilizing the Engineering Design Process, students are held to a variety of standards for their finished product. Most importantly, they are provided the opportunity to engage their imaginations and apply critical thinking to supply their own desired outcome.

Cost: $26.95/month, $25.95/Month (3 month plan), $24.95/month (6 month plan), $23.95/month (12 month plan). Ships to Canada & US.

STEMists also receive access to the special “Beyond...in a Box” online learning portal. This is a unique feature of Groovy Lab in a Box because it gives STEMists a deeper understanding of that month’s topic. “Beyond...in a Box” has videos and more interactive activities to supplement what they are learning from the box projects, which also helps the STEMist even more when completing the design challenge.

Groovy Lab in a Box Review
This review is more of a reveal, because we haven’t done the projects and because my son is only 4 and I think this box would be too advanced for him. But I can tell you that this box is unlike any other kids subscription box out there and was developed by a team of educators and scientists, so it is very much a learning experience! July’s theme is “Here Comes The Sun!” Engineering Design Process. During your Engineering Design Process you will learn about the sun, solar energy, water purification, and much more.
Referring to the Lab Notebook that guides and instructs you through the experiments, the projects include:
Solar Balloon

Solar Oven

Conductivity Sensor

Groovy Lab in a Box is very well thought up and curated box! A key part of the box is the Lab Notebook that is FULL of information and emphasizes brainstorming. For safety reasons it is highly recommended that adult supervision and assistance are required for all activities in the box and on the website. This box would be perfect for any child that loves science or wants to learn more, as well and for the child who has a naturally inquisitive mind.
