This box was full and I couldn't wait to see what was inside!
This month’s box is focused on the rich heritage of Uttar Pradesh of India. Uttar Pradesh is located in northern India. Its city Agra is home to the iconic Taj Mahal monument.
Shazar Pendant with Semi-Precious Stone
Shazar is a unique stone available only in Banda region of Uttar Pradesh. The stone was discovered around 400 years ago by an Arab. In Persian ‘Shazar’ means trees. Shazar is a homogeneous stone and is found in different colours and patterns. The process of stone formation though is simple & natural but takes thousands of years to complete. The leafy patterns are created by entrapped fossils of fungus between two layers of stones. The exquisite patterns of black and orange in the store are deposits of iron and manganese that have entered the agate under high pressure. During the process, fungus secretes some acid, which makes the stones translucent and acts as an inorganic glue to fuse the stone layers. The deposits are not evenly distributed and all stones do not have a clear dendrite formation. Hence, slicing of stone needs high level of expertise to show the colourful patterns.
Brass Bowl with Hand Crafted Minakari Work
This bowl is beautiful! The colour and engraving pattern on the metal brass wares is very interesting! Minakari on Brass Ware is one of the exquisite and elegant art forms developed in Moradabad hundreds of years ago.
Zardozi Embroidered Jewelry Box
Zardozi is a form of embroidery that came to India from Persia. Its literal translation, “zar” meaning gold and “dozi” meaning embroidery, refers to the process of using metallic-bound threads to sew embellishment on to various fabrics. This heavy and intricate style of design is said to have been brought to India with the Mughal conquerors. Lucknow Zardozi has more ornate and heavy designs, with a 3D quality to their motifs.
Silk Brocade Cushion Cover
Brocade is a class of richly decorative shuttle-woven fabrics often made in coloured silks with or without gold and silver threads. Brocade is typically woven on a draw loom. This doesn't go with my decor style, but it's going to someone who I know will love it.
Natural Lavender Aroma Oil
Attar is a concentrated liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants, which is extracted by distillation process. Kannauj is the only place in the world where Attars are made, thereby owning the name - "The Perfume City of India". The Lavender oil can be used in the diffuser or for bath.
