Chisel Shave Club Review + Promo Code – January 2016

Most men today shave with expensive cartridge razors and chemical filled gels, but traditional wet shaving is starting to make a comeback. Many of those who’ve made the switch find that they get a superior shave with less irritation and enjoy the process of shaving much more than using a cartridge razor. The wet shaving routine does require more deliberate care and effort but for those willing to spend the time on it, the rewards are well worth it.

Dr. Squatch Cedar Citrus Soap Bar
$7

Use this soap in the shower to nourish your skin with natural coconut and olive oils. The rustic scent of cedar wood and zesty citrus will make you feel great. The lather was decent and the soap was not harsh or perfumey.

Brickell Clarifying Gel Face Wash
$7

This product is also made with coconut as well as aloe and geranium to cleanse the skin without drying it out. I found this product to be very gentle and again very mild on the scent.

Brickell Instant Relief Aftershave
$13

Aloe Vera moisturizes and reduces irritation, coconut nourishes and strengthens your skin tissue while hyaluronic acid rejuvenates and refreshes. This was my favourite product in the box. It did not feel greasy after going on and left a very subtle fragrance that was very appealing. It’s only a two ounce bottle but a little goes a long way.

Red Leaf Black Tea Shaving Soap
$1.60

This is a 100% vegan shaving soap, handmade in small batches in the Red Leaf studio in Seattle, WA. This scent is smoky and warm with hints of Sandalwood. I did not get sandalwood from this and I found the lather a bit weak. Still overall, I liked the product and the outcome after I shaved. I would use this again.

Shaving Brush
$20

Standard unfinished wooden handle. Bristles are soft on the skin. I have no idea what the bristles are made of. It’s not an expensive one and I have no idea how long it will last. Great for the beginner or if you want to bring one when you travel.

Astra Superior Platinum Blades
$4.25

Forged in Russia these stainless steel blades are coated in platinum for a smoother shave. Nothing will make you feel quite as gentlemanly as shaving your face with a precious metal. A very sharp blade that produced an excellent shave. I actually shaved a few times before I had to change the blade.

Shark Super Stainless Blades
$1.50

The blades are manufactured in Egypt for a smooth, luxurious and comfortable shave. Known for their consistency and sharpness, they are considered a favourite among the wet shaving crowd. I found the blade was fine for one shave and I needed to change it out. Yes, these blades are very sharp too.

Double Edge Safety Razor
$25

Standard stainless steel head and handle. Grip is rough so you won’t lose it in the shower. You can get much better quality ones with very fancy handles. Overall a great starter razor.

Chisel Shave Club Review + Promo Code – January 2016

OK, let’s be realistic here. This is a tedious, labour intensive method of shaving and I love it. Unlike the promo tag says, I don’t shave like this every day. I just don’t have time. So where is the appeal? I really enjoy the quality of the products and the subtle fragrance they leave behind. I live in Canada and winter in my home town leaves my skin dry and rough. A wet shave actually does revitalize your skin, especially if you are pre treating with an oil. There is also an element of danger associated with shaving with a straight razor that appeals to the typical guy. In my opinion I think women appreciate a guy that takes some time and makes an effort to look and smell good. The price point here is comparable with other shave subscription boxes that I have seen. All the products are excellent and I was very pleased with the content. The value is there, especially in the first box where you get the hardware. In follow-up boxes I am not sure that they can maintain the value. I really hope they do.
